July 9, 2015:

Rotarian Jon Marken arranged for the Rotary Club of Farmville to hear the news and updates on Virginia Legal Aid Society. Bill Shear and Pam DeCamp spoke of the VLAS new location on Third Street in Farmville and provided general information regarding the goals and mission of the organization. Legal Aid provides legal representation to low income individuals in civil cases, such as suits related to housing, health care benefits, education, advance directives, custody disputes, and more. Majority of their clients are elderly or families with children. Office in Farmville serves 9 counties; the attorneys stay busy. VLAS does not have a regular and steady source of funding so to support our community, these attorneys depend on private donations and grants. If you are looking to help our community out, stop by their new office!?

Rotarian Jeff's project was powerful! No wonder he is our president elect! Three hundred copies of "When I Grow Up" by Weird Al Yankovich were distributed to students of Prince Edward and Cumberland Elementary Schools! Additionally, Rotarian Jeff recruited a dozen fellow Rotarians to not only deliver, but also read these books to the children! It was a great experience for both Rotarians and the children! We even received some "thank you" notes!

Check out the pictures in our albums!!!

During their last meeting, Farmville Rotarians learned about The Harvest Kitchen. Faye Honebein and Martha Bobb explained that this organization is an effort of Farmville Church of Christ and it provides our community with mid-day meal for those in need, survival classes with topics like gardening, baking, and canning, as well as a farm stand with fresh fruits and vegetables from their own Harvest Kitchen Garden. Lunch with Jesus is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm, and the farm stand operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.

Rotarians were also happy to welcome a new member, Sally Maloney, who was sponsored by Rotarian Charles Nelson. Finally, in addition to Faye and Martha, Rotarians were also visited by Rivoningo Hlophe, Rotary Scholar from Limpopo, South Africa.
